This is the third book in this series, and, as it turns out, it is like all third books in trilogies. Ultimate showdown of underdog versus crazy powerful baddie (Frodo vs Sauron). Overwhelming odds against a scrappy band of heroes.
So, while this doesn't break new literary ground, it is a fun, crazy read. The author keeps the story moving, wraps up all the loose ends, and doesn't bring in new weirdness but builds on the weirdness he carefully wrote in the first two books.
It's still a bit of Raymond Chandler meets X-Men, but this time with some LOTR theme thrown in.
