I unfortunately was a little disappointed by this read. I thought it was going to give much more witchy vibes but it felt more like folklore and demon/monster vibes. Our MC is certainly a new witch finding her power but to me the central part of the story was finding out who Father was, and what his rebirth was about.

I also felt the underlying sensuality of the magic quite… UGH. Like it just felt like this was written by a man. For me, magic and witches embody women empowerment, independence, freedom, and power. And certainly we all can have different views on it, but for me I did not find Brom’s portrayal of magic my favorite. I thought for sure Abitha was gonna get it on with Samson at any minute…😵‍💫

However, there was a lot to enjoy about this read as well! I loved the historical setting and the plot of Abitha having to fight the patriarchy to own what was rightfully hers. I also loved the eventual trial scenes and how crazy puritanical society was, like being punished for being late to church…I’d barely survive in this town that is for sure. Also the drawings on the chapter headings and in the middle of the book made it so much easier to bring the story to life for me, I loved that. I def recommend you read this physically!

All to say I will give Brom another try, and hopefully I will find another book of his a favorite!
