Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People about Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge
5.0
Finished this in one sitting - on MLK Day whilst living in the UK. And it hit hard. British racism and anti-racism are linked to American ditto, but understanding the unique strains of a world-wide post-colonial reality is important and I was glad to challenge my own unrealized prejudices about racism itself! American culture has dominated the publication, education, and certain propaganda spaces about racism and civil rights movements. It's a bizarre additional layer of 21st century colonization, to be honest, just the American empire instead of the British!
If you aspire to be actively anti-racist, you have an obligation to educate widely beyond your comfort zone, including your own national perspectives. You cannot contribute positively to any kind of dialog without first listening. I'd particularly recommend this book to my American contacts who want to understand how the same fundamental prejudices take many forms.
