Limberlost starts slowly, wending it's way through a landscape of river, orchard, towering gums and rustling wildlife. The landscape holds riches the people struggle to articulate - with love, anger, disapointment conveyed in brief phrases, infrequent gestures. Arnott wends all of this into a story about a boy and a boat and all of the things they cannot say, until it becomes about something far bigger and yet is ulimately hugely moving in being a story of a single family. It is a suburb novel, hard to fault, and hard to forget.
