Do you have a book that you're so psyched to read? You hype it up so much in your head that eventually you're not sure you want to read it because you're afraid it won't meet your expectations?

Her Body & Other Parties was that book for me. It took me months to find a copy of this book. And when it arrived at my door, I let it sit on my shelf for a couple of months before deciding to give it a go.

And now that I've finally read it, I feel a little stupid for being so scared about reading it 😂 Girl, why???

I loved this short story collection. It's dark and twisty and visceral and imaginative and heartbreaking. I love it. It was everything I hoped it would be. If you're a fan of magical realism with a touch of darkness and horror, then this book is for you.

My favorite stories:

💚 The Husband Stitch - About a woman who is forced to give everything of herself to the man she loves. This story occasionally breaks the fourth wall and I thought that was really cool.
💚 Mothers - Time is presented in a non-linear fashion, blurring the lines of reality, fantasy, and memory.
💚 Eight Bites - A story about diet culture, women's bodies, and beauty standards. Making a choice to conform or to love.
💚 Difficult at Parties - The big horrible thing is left unsaid. But it doesn't need to be said. We are left with the aftermath, and we understand what it is to put ourselves back together after we are broken to pieces.
