Another second chance romance in this short series and another that worked for me! Again, it’s usually not my thing, and this was done differently than the first. This one was more focused on their current relationship, ten years after an intense ~friendship~ that was really a little more than that but ended pretty badly.
Despite the fact that I know nothing about baseball, I have read several baseball romances this year alone, and they all seem to have these themes of unpredictability, second chances, patience, hope, optimism, and wanting. Facets of the game itself reflected back in the burgeoning and rekindled relationships within them. Those might seem like aspects of all sports romances, but there’s a particularity you just know when you see it. Sorry to keep calling baseball slow, but that really is woven into the structure and pacing of these books.
It’s a reminder that things don’t always go our way, whether it’s life, love, or a baseball game, but that doesn’t mean they end badly. Just differently. It's quiet, intimate, and Being Known (arguably the most romantic aspect of any relationship).
It felt a little cheesy at the end but maybe that’s me being a hater. I know when wrapping up a series, it’s probably a little difficult to avoid a little bit of cheesiness. There were also some aspects I would’ve liked to see developed a little more, and I think maybe these are better read spaced out, as they all have a pretty similar vibe that maybe just left me wanting something a little different by the end. Not to rag on it! I did enjoy them. But I don’t know. I probably wouldn’t watch three baseball games in a row, y’know?
Bit of a side note but I love how queer sports romance series inevitably culminate with one Super Gay™️ team. lfg
