The Queen by Nick Cutter

There were some really fantastic elements to this book, but also some not so great. I found the horror elements to be top notch and fantastic. Insects? Are you kidding me? Creepy and horrifying on so many levels. This book brought so many nightmares to life for me and I loved that about it. This book had some fantastic science fiction elements as well, it was just weird on so many levels. The flashbacks were fantastic and added a lot to the story. I always appreciate them when they are done right and that was the case here. However, where this book lost me was the pacing. I did not appreciate the slow pace with the horror elements. For me if you are going to give me gory gruesome things, I want to be propelled through that reading experience, not weighed down and feeling like I’m walking in mud. It was too much and I really didn’t like that. I think that listening to this one on audio helped a little in the pacing aspect because I could speed the book up, but it wasn’t enough. I did appreciate listening to the details of this one on audio though, it did bring the story to life for me.
I would rather never see a bug again, and in that regard this book is going to stick with me, so it’s memorable to say the least!
Thank you to @simon.audio and @gallerybook for this audio and physical copy. All thoughts are my own.
