Goodbye Note by J.R. Gray

4.0

This is a long love story; of one gay man and one who doesn't have a label, after believing himself to be straight. One falls first and it takes long nights together with secrets spilled and trusted kisses for the other to catch up. Lots of childhood trauma, makes this gritty. It's based around life on a tour bus, rather than the stage. I was convinced of their deep love for each other, despite its slow pace and low steam. There is a cataclysmic event in their star aligned story, I am not sure how I feel about it. Their love was strong and I assumed unbreakable. We don't know the reason straight away, we just feel the hurt coming from both men. The story jumps decades to get back on track. When we find out the reason for why their lives took a huge detour, it is appalling and hard to accept. They shared everything, I am cross they didn't trust in each other and navigate through the storm together. Arik is a songwriter, and this book is full of meaningful lyrics, it's his love language. I needed to remember these men are young and under pressure, their flippant drug use is assumed. The constant strain on their mind and body is huge, there is a big mental health rep, throughout this book. There is a happy ending, it was a well deserved one, I just wish they had never taken the detour to get there. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
