Perfect Fifths by Megan McCafferty
2.0
I loved the first 3 books in this series. The fourth and fifth book were so hard to get through but I had to see how Jessica Darling & Marcus Flutie ended up.
Similar to other reviews, this book felt like fan fiction. As I read I tried to think of how it could’ve been written differently. While the 4th book broke the “Jessica’s diary” organization in favor of a week long breakup journal to Marcus (which was the longest, drawn out breakup letter ever. Who realistically expects someone to read a breakup journal?) the fifth book is told in 3rd person which is just jarring at first. Yeah, we get Marcus’s POV and we kinda get a different angle to understand Jessica but meh.
It’s certainly imperfect and I skimmed a lot of the book. The nostalgia of this series and my love of the messy character of Jessica Darling pushed me to finish the series again on my re-read as an adult.
Would I read the last 2 books in the series again? No.
Was it entertaining nevertheless? Yes.
Am I annoyed with both characters as an adult? Yes.
Final thoughts:
MVP of the series: Marin.
This entire book could’ve been a short story.
I’m left to wonder how things turned out for Jessica and Marcus and I’d have rather heard that story.
Jump ahead even more and give me what them in grad school looks like.
Then what about a spin-off with main character Marin writing in her journal?
I feel like that could be a fun way to bring this world of Jessica and Marcus to a new generation. Meg, call me up and let’s brainstorm! I got ideas.
