The Wedding People by Alison Espach

dark emotional funny reflective medium-paced

4.5

I was super surprised by this book! For some reason I was under the impression this was more of a light beach read about wedding hijinks, but we immediately are thrust into a much darker and emotional story. Don't get me wrong, it was still very funny and full of wedding hijinks, but it was more of a quiet mediation on how hard and confusing it is to be alive. How can we be brave and honest and ask for what we really want, how can we connect with those around us to make the heaviness of life lighter, how can we stop doing things we hate just because we have always done them. This was a book of conversations and internal monologues, which took some getting used to but I found it to be very successful. Loved these characters and the journey Phoebe took to develop and change, a great late-summer read!
