They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

5.0

I absolutely loved this book. It was such a unique idea and I thought it was executed really well. There certainly are questions that arise from a system such as death cast about free will and predestination, but those questions really aren’t the point of the book. I think for it to be properly enjoyed you have to accept that.

It was really fun to see how the world changed and didn’t change with the existence of death cast, the systems and businesses that arose with it. It’s also interesting though, as a commentary on human nature and capitalism.

My one tiny critique is just that Rufus used the word “mad” (in the context of “very”) way too much. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with using “mad” or AAVE in general, it was just annoyingly repetitive.

Rufus and Mateo’s friendship and romance was so sweet and enjoyable to follow. It’s an interesting scenario cause normally their romance would be way too fast, but in this context it works and I really loved reading it.

This book was heart wrenching but so so good. That ending? Fantastic. I can’t wait to read the sequel and more from Adam Silvera.
