The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

5.0

This was an excellent story! High level premise: Cussy Carter is a young packhorse librarian (part of Roosevelt's WPA) bringing books and reading to the poverty stricken hollows of Troublesome Creek in 1930's Kentucky Appalachia. Extra interesting layer is that Cussy suffers from a blood disorder called methemoglobinemia and makes her appear blue-skinned. Look up the Blue People of Kentucky - it's a real thing! In any case, Cussy is of sweetest temperament that keeps falling prey to people who are fearful of her difference or her father who is trying to get her married off to a man will take care of her. Of course - Cussy knows she is better off taking care of herself. So many interesting elements: packhorse librarians, depression era Appalachia, the Blue People of Kentucky. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and surprised I haven't heard more about it.
