Wow, with so many mixed reviews on this book I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. But I LOVED IT!
This book follows Addie, Born in 1698 In a small village in France. Being a woman in this time, of course she is expected to marry so that her husband could take care of her. She escapes most of her youth without marriage but it gets to a point where she can no longer run away from it. On our wedding day to a man she has no interest in being with, she runs to the edge of the forest and praise to the gods. Little did she know that it was just after dark, and you never ask from help from the darkness. Someone answers, and for freedom, she trades her soul. Little did she know that with freedom meant that no one would remember her. Once she is out of sight from a person she just met, they completely forgot her.
She lives about 300 years like this. Until she meets Henry in a bookstore. For some reason he remembers her, she has no idea why but she is thrilled.
This book has mystery, darkness, Romance, time, history and a lot of intrigue. One of my favourite things about this book is flipping between present day and Addie’s past life as she moves through the years. I absolutely loved this story and it may be one of my favourite books of the year. V. E Schwabs Writing style is unique but if it’s something you love a completely captures you. I remember thinking 80 pages in not a lot has happened plot wise but I am completely enthralled and it is because of the writing style.
If you’re a fan of this author and you want to see more romance from her then this is definitely the book for you. The ending was not what I expected but I really enjoyed it. Definitely more of a slow read and I highly recommend the audiobook.
