Poppy Jenkins by Clare Ashton

5.0

I stayed up until 1am to finish Poppy Jenkins. I just couldn't go to sleep with 10 % left. And once I was done, I was on such a high and buzzing inside it took me a while to fall asleep. It was sooo good. I immediately put it under my best of the best tag here. 5 ⭐

The book was so well written, like Ashton's other books I've read before. Although there's only one POV, the love interest is also a whole person that we got to know through flashbacks and dialogue between various characters.

I cried my eyes out towards the end. Also other bits made me teary eyed. I also laughed out loud multiple times. The story evolves at a nice pace. And while some aspects were 'obvious', it didn't bother me because they fit perfectly and were written beautifully. There's romance, steam, stolen glances, pining, confusion, drama, misunderstanding...

The writing style makes me think of modern Jane Austen. While I haven't read Austen in original English, only translations, I've seen so many films and TV productions to get the idea of the language. There was something similar in Poppy Jenkins, the way characters interacted and acted especially while speaking to each other.

I want to read the book again soon. My TBR is a mile high so I probably wait a few months, tho'. And I will definitely buy the paperback version in the future.
