Miss Iceland by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir

3.0

I found this somewhat boring and confusing, though not to the point that I didn't want to finish it.

I didn't know what to expect with [b:Miss Iceland|48637765|Miss Iceland|Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634107325l/48637765._SX50_.jpg|66427158], a book that I won in a Goodreads giveaway in 2020, and that I was probably more drawn to because of the cover.

Although I haven't read a lot of Scandinavian literature, the stuff I have read has some similarities. It includes a lot more description of everything, to the point of being somewhat boring overall. Two out of the three I have read tend much more to the "slice of life" genre, in a way that symbolizes nothing much happening, and as a result, it's difficult to tell when stuff does happen. While I won't write off a whole demographic of literature because of a few bad ones, I'm wondering if this is more of a trend in literature from the region.

As for [b:Miss Iceland|48637765|Miss Iceland|Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634107325l/48637765._SX50_.jpg|66427158] itself, I have to say it was difficult to follow. I liked the exploration of getting access to literature in a language not spoken by many. It's interesting to think about how much translating has to be done to get books to people around the world. I imagine, even more so before the internet and all the translation services and videos available.

A lot of the themes from this were similar to [b:Mr. & Mrs. American Pie|36411207|Mr. & Mrs. American Pie (Streaming as Palm Royale on Apple TV)|Juliet McDaniel|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1530035532l/36411207._SX50_.jpg|58106429], which I really liked when I read it. However, there was a lot lacking about [b:Miss Iceland|48637765|Miss Iceland|Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634107325l/48637765._SX50_.jpg|66427158] that I've seen in similar books. The biggest issue was the lack of a story or compelling characters.

This is another book I'm glad to finally have off of my TBR. It was definitely a book to read once, and I look forward to passing this one on.
