Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
2.0
This was a quick and ok sort of a story. The characters have the feel of Ishiguros past books in that they have such a reserve and coldness but he tells their anguish through their actions.
The plot was fine for a quick read of a superficially engaging book…a good beach read. In that respect I suppose it was interesting and engaging..
I have given this 2 stars because while I see the plan was to puzzle about humanity and what makes us human but I think the story was a little too superficial. It read like a YA book....and while there is no criticism about that, I just wanted more from this. It was too obvious I suppose. I read The Employees by Olga Ravn after it and felt that book tackled the themes much more thoughtfully.
There were some parts of this that didn’t add up and that was a little frustrating (quite a lot of these actually). The book, on reflection, felt like it needed a fair bit more depth.. I feel I am not qualified to say this sort of thing about a book by this author...but I honestly felt I wanted more development and thought behind it.
I found the relationships a bit to simple.
All in all I enjoyed the story but it isn't a book I think I will always remember or ponder over. It was an easy superficial read. A so-so read. Excellent travel reading

One thing I have puzzled about ....was Josie really the same at the end...how come the sun had such a massive effect...I wondered if she was a B3...and this was not known by Klara...it just seemed the sun 'saved her' to quickly and too completely. It felt a bit daftAll in all I enjoyed the story but it isn't a book I think I will always remember or ponder over. It was an easy superficial read. A so-so read. Excellent travel reading
