Holy depression batman.

Beartooth follows brothers Thad and Hazen as they pick up odd jobs to survive - poaching bears, chopping firewood, tedious tasks that bring little to no reward but just enough to scrape by in life. When the brothers accept a job from a notoriously vicious gentleman known as The Scot, they put their livelihoods and their very lives in danger. But in the process the two discover themselves, their differences, and the cruelty of the world around them.

This book was incredibly descriptive. I know the Yellowstone area and the Beartooth Mountains fairly well, growing up and living in Montana, but reading this book I felt like I could see the story unfolding, smell the trees, and hear the sounds of the setting around me. It was beautifully written and the story of Thad and Hazen was absolutely tragic, they just never caught a break.

The book was slow and atmospheric, very much a family drama, which is out of my usual reading comfort zone. If you are looking for tragic vibes and a beautiful setting, Beartooth is for you.
