Thomas so delicately deals with one of the most divisive and heartbreaking issues of our time. She not only tackles the issue of police brutality, but also the issues of drug use, gangs, crime, and safety in the black community. In this way, she shows us the humanity of a neighborhood that so many of us (white folk) have never experienced or taken a moment to try to empathize with. Five stars purely for the way she dealt with these issues.

Lastly, I loved Starr's character. She's so beautiful and passionate and smart and I fell in love with her and her imperfect family.
