The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut
3.0
It took me a good long while to warm up to this. There's something about the way some of these guys of this period try to be darkly humored that often doesn't work well for me, like they're trying too hard or something.
But I warmed up more toward the end. I especially liked the bottom line - "I was a victim of a series of accidents, as we all are". Indeed. (That said, he seems to open the door back up to sense, meaning, and a God who is not necessarily Indifferent at the end - WTF?)
Jerry Garcia bought the screen rights to this and tried for a good fifteen years to get a film made. I get that he liked the vibe of the thing, as I imagine growing up iconoclastic and anti-authoritarian in the iconic and conformist 50s, beyond being just a sci-fi fan, would have drawn him to it. But the narrative is a little loose, and I think it would be a hard movie to make.
Anyway, it was OK. I have one more Vonnegut that I intend to read - Cat's Cradle. I have my reasons. But I don't have to look forward to it all that much.
