The Mongols by David O. Morgan
challenging
informative
medium-paced
4.0
Apparently part of a series on the peoples of Europe, which is in no way clear on the cover but Morgan references the irony of this SEVERAL times.
I got this for a class I was taking on central Asia and, being up to my eyeballs in trauma at the time, did not read it. I have now read it. I wish I’d read it at the time–it would’ve clarified a lot–but while I don’t regret reading it now, I don’t think I’m going to keep it.
It’s a thematic summary of the Mongol empire, starting roughly with their origins and rise, and then proceeding regionally across the empire. It is an excellent broad summary of the Mongols and what they did and did not do. It is not full of interesting fun facts, personalities, or historical drama. It is a very good book for an upper level undergraduate class; it is not useful for a writer.
Which it’s not intended to be, but nevertheless, here I am and I need more specific books, not general ones. For that purpose, the most useful section is the bibliography at the end.
