Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See
5.0
Murder mystery circa 1400’s China. This is an epic retelling of Lady Tan’s life - a well to do daughter, trained in medicine, married off to another well to do family. She was a feminist in the 1400s, be still my heart. As with many heat wrenching tales that I have found accompanies ancient Chinese customs like first wives and concubines: women are property, sons are preferred, women’s lives consist of serving the men and producing as many sons as possible. And omg the foot binding. God forbid you are a woman born into a lower class and don’t have wet nurses and handmaids to help you. Overall, pacing was great, storyline kept me engaged…reminiscent of The Joy Luck Club or Memoirs of a Geisha in the suffering that the women endure.
