People Kill People by Ellen Hopkins

5.0

"People kill people. Guns just make it easier". A gun is sold in the classifieds after a painful event. Six people's lives will never be the same when the gun is fired. Any one of them is capable of pulling the trigger. Each one is wrestling with their own personal and political demons. Who pulled the trigger?

Ellen Hopkins tackles a hot button topic: gun violence. She tells this story in alternating points of views and snippets showing the readers each character's motivation for gun violence. Each one is a suspect with motive but only one actually completes the deed. Hopkins delves into the minds of humans and exposes their vulnerabilities and propensity for violence. She aims to show us that anyone is capable of violence and that acts of violence can even bring strangers together.

This book comes at the perfect time considering gun violence is so prevalent in the country. The author takes us deep into the world of each character and we get to watch their lives intersect as they navigate through their own crises of conscious and identity. Hopkins tells a raw story and doesn't shy away from exploring and exposing the ugly side of having a gun. Each character has a unique voice and experience that builds on to the mystery until the very end. There were points that really triggered me and made me angry but I continued because it is written in a way that will push you past your own beliefs and bring to a place of understanding. I really appreciate that this book exists in the universe. Thanks to Simon & Schuster for the ARC and chance to provide an honest review.
