Princess Bari by Hwang Sok-yong
4.0
Bari was named after a Korean Legend of a exiled Princess who will bring peace to wandering souls. Bari was found by her Grandmother in the middle of Winter, after being abandoned by her Father who was in distress after having a seventh daughter.
Growing up Bari become increasingly aware of her inherited ability to read mood and thoughts, and soothe others. The short story takes us through Bari escaping the North Korean famine, to flee to China. Bari meets many kind and terrible people along the way; her ability to lift herself away from unspeakable incidents keep her sane.
Bari becomes a Masseuse in London and explores her connections with the spiritual world through her senses.
I really enjoyed Bari's connection with her Grandmother and Pet Dog ❤️
Bari experiences many hardships, but her abilities help to guide her along the way. This was a short story with a lot of bittersweet moments. I really enjoyed the use of magical realism to highlight mortality, morality and redemption.
