The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson

5.0

4.5 stars

Shirley Jackson really understands that the true horror of life is in other people-not murderers or psychopaths, just regular people. Conventions, the subtle (or not so subtle) bullying effect of conformity (or the fear of it), the domestic spaces people push you into or out of, traditions, racism, judgement, domesticity etc. Most if the stories are often quite banal, but always simmering underneath with the kind of hostility that only comes with living with other people, in communities.

As always, she is a master of her craft.
