The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty

There’s so much hype about Liane Moriarty’s writing since the new mini-series starring Nicole Kidman, ‘Big Little Lies’. I decided one of her books is the first of my reviews.
This is a clever book, with lots of twist and turns but written in a style that makes it an easy read. I read it in two days and I couldn’t put it down (though work and things made that necessary). I love the characters real human flaws. It’s warts and all.
It starts with Cecilia’s (so-called) perfect family. A gorgeous husband and three daughters. She sells Tupperware. She’s involved in everything from P & C to welcoming committee. She’s a bit OCD but likeable. She finds a letter written by her husband to her ‘in case he dies’. Her dilemma is whether to open it and read it.
Other characters are portrayed with clarity. They’re all going through turmoil of some sort and are intertwined without even knowing it. Tess has discovered her husband is in love with her cousin and uses her mother’s broken ankle as an excuse to take her son Liam to Sydney to get away from the love birds.
Rachel is the mother of Janie. Janie was murdered in 1984 when she was 17. Rachel lives a half-life because of Janie’s death. She blames the school PE teacher Connor, who was the last to see Janie alive. When Rachel’s son and daughter in law tell her that they are moving to New York and taking her beloved grandson (the best thing in her life) life gets even more difficult.
Tess, enrols Liam (keep up I know there’s a lot of characters but everyone is necessary to the story) in the local school. She quickly meets Cecelia who talks a lot while Tess doesn’t. Connor (the PE teacher) was an old boyfriend of Tess’s and they begin a hot affair. She can’t figure out if it’s revenge or just really good sex.
I don’t want to give away too much but Moriarty has a way of pulling it all together and spitting out surprise, after surprise. It’s intelligent, honest, heart-warming, odd and bold. I loved it and can’t wait to read her other books.
