4 Essential Studies: Beliefs and Practices to Reclaim Student Agency by Kelly Gallagher, Penny Kittle

challenging inspiring reflective slow-paced

4.0

4 Essential Studies was chosen for my English department's annual summer book study. I'm always hesitant to read a Gallagher text because I feel he's a super teacher and what he says he does in his classroom is unattainable in mine. But I went into this book with a positive attitude. I wanted to read this book and learn just one thing I could take back to my classroom. My belief that Gallagher and Kittle are super teachers -- unique beings who have teaching in their DNA -- still holds firm. BUT I did learn a few things I am eager to take back to my classroom. I loved reading this book because as I was reading I could see the potential for my future students. In addition to the content of this book, I also really liked how this book is written. I wasn't bogged down by boring education lingo, acronyms, or stats. Instead, it is two teachers sharing best practices that they actually still use in their classes today. I found this book to be incredibly valuable, and I highly recommend this text to any teacher currently teaching.
