Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

5.0

I surprised myself by really enjoying this one. Though the plot/storyline isn't one I would ordinarily go for I loved how it was written. The language was so evocative of place and character, I could feel the suffocating humidity. The structure and rhythm of the writing was hypnotic drawing me on to read further. It a sign of a well written book when my brain struggles to snap back to reality when not reading and that was the case with this one. I spent so much time in Esch's head, hypnotised into her mindset that it was hard to return to my own. Probably not a book I would read again but one I'm really glad I did read.
