Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley
4.0
I loved Firekeeper's Daughter and was so excited to read this one. Unfortunately, I didn't love it as much, but I still really enjoyed reading it.
First, what engrossed me the most and I appreciated the most was learning about NAGPRA (the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) and experiencing different emotions alongside Perry as she learned about the complexities of returning ancestors and sacred pieces to the right tribes. Her rage, grief and determination were palpable to the reader, and her passion for righting these injustices was a key piece to what kept me reading. I also loved seeing Daunis as a full-grown auntie to Perry and Pauline and as a mother.
What kept me from loving this book as much as FKD was the inner monologue. I found it to be a little immature. I understand that Perry is young, and her growth was a main journey in the book, but I still felt like the juvenileness kept me from thoroughly enjoying it. I will also say I didn't quite feel the same sparks between Perry and her love interest and I felt that the relationship was a bit underdeveloped.
Overall, I still highly recommend this book. I learned so much, and I really appreciated reading about Perry's journey to fight for her community, for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirit peoples and for the ancestors that deserve to come home.
