Dnf @ 70%, I kept pushing because I didn't ever dislike it, just slowly lost momentum

I could not get over the impression that this was a vampire AU of Divergent. The sorting into factions based on personality type, the shaky glossed over world building, the character archetypes, the general plot. This book needed more development and more room to breath. This probably should've been split up into a series tbh. It feels more like you're skimming the surface of the story with brief moments where you actually stop for a scene, it honestly felt like the rough draft of a season of some CW show that needed to be split up and fleshed out. I never felt emotion or connection or depth. It made me think of reading a fanfiction about some media that I'd never heard of before, as if I was missing context and affection that that the audience is expected to have prior to reading

I don't want to be entirely negative, like I said, I never at any point disliked the experience of reading this. It was simply very odd and could've been much more. Some of the writing is wonderful when it slows down for long enough to soak in a moment. The depiction of vampires was interesting and fresh. The discussion of how vampires have a different relationship to gender and sexuality was wonderful if a little sparse. I just think this needed another draft and maybe some restructuring
