Death Valley by Melissa Broder

4.0

Based on other reviews, I didn't think I would like this book but I mostly* enjoyed it (there were a few sections that were a tad tedious). I found myself drawn in to the mystical aspects of her desert journey, her way of thinking, her confusion and ambivalence about life and death, and the messiness of dealing with other people's pain and one's own pain and anticipation of grief and loss. Her "self talk" and conversations that she had with inanimate objects felt real (maybe this is more for those of us who experience constant conversations and chatter in our own heads, as well as constant worry about how others feel or whether what we are doing is good enough..... so it felt relatable!).
