I wonder if there's a reason why this book was so hard to track down a while back? 🤔
When it comes to the synopsis, this book should have been a home run. The protagonist Noriko marries into a large, powerful/successful family, but things start to feel "off." Could be cultish vibes, could be crime, but it's clear that Noriko isn't getting the happily ever after she's hoping for.
Well, the reader isn't getting a happy experience either, so buckle up. First off, the way Noriko deals with her suspicions about her new family is absolutely maddening. There's definitely something for her to be worried about, but the way she turns on a dime whenever she discusses her suspicions with a friend will give you whiplash. It's just constant back and forth with her and it makes you loathe her as a character. She's not as bad as Jade from the chainsaw book, but she's gunning for the title.
And then there's the way the book ends (again, no spoilers), which is just so weird and off-putting. Given that you've stuck by an awful main character for the whole book, the ending just seems like a lazy throwaway.
This could have been a great book, but it was a flop for me. I can't go into real depth without giving spoilers, but there are no real redeeming qualities here.
Oh well 🤷
