Stretching the Heavens: The Life of Eugene England and the Crisis of Modern Mormonism by Terryl Givens
4.0
England tried so hard to get the validation from the LDS Apostles and was frequent disappointed because he didn’t get it. A man if great testimony and ahead of his time, England promoted dialogue of gospel topics and creating the journal Dialogue, which is still published. If he had been born later, I believe he’d have received the validation he sought (and less emotional pain) on the priesthood ban, pacifism, Atonement and the stronger force of mercy, and gender and feminism, although these are still topics that are wrestled with amongst members and Church leadership. Givens gives not only a description of England’s legacy but also the history of the LDS church from the ‘70s through the ‘90’s. For a chronological, historical perspective read this after Greg Prince’s book on the prophet David O. McKay.
