wouldn’t recommend as someone’s first beowulf translation, but definitely worth your time once you know the poem
wish i had read a more traditional translation more recently, to better compare and contrast
like the various ‘i’s. it’s so true of beowulf as a story told and retold and retelling, although i could have done without some of the asides
also found myself resistant to the choice to title every piece. i did like the fact and way it was divided into poems, but their titling was intrusive on the flow
conjures some real rich, ripe descriptions
