Hum by Helen Phillips
4.0
This was a rather interesting book that will stop and make you think. I love dystopian books that are just close enough to our future to do this, yet hopefully far enough away that I won’t live the reality (as was present here. In this book nature is pretty much non-existent, which is scary in itself, and the world is overcome with AI, which is a real concern. Add in some drama surrounding kids and you have a recipe for disaster. I ate it up. I really enjoyed this one and listened to it on audio while following along in the print version. I did get a little caught up because a few of the words used sounded familiar but mean different things in this made-up world. I found myself annoyed with them because they sound like baby-talk versions of current words and it grated on my nerves, so do be prepared for that if you listen on audio. However, the rest of the book was good and I was hooked. The pacing was middle of the road and I found it to be even throughout. The topic is rather nightmarish. Not only the AI aspects but the children aspect as well. The children were a bit much at times as well. I don’t want to go into too many more details because it might give things away, but I did enjoy it.
Thank you to @marysueruccibooks for the physical copy and @simon.audio for the audio copy. All thoughts are my own.
