She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan

5.0

4.5 - I’m not usually a historical fantasy fan, but I picked this up because of the comparisons to Mulan and The Song of Achilles, which are two stories I love. She Who Become the Sun ended up meeting my expectations with it’s themes of fate, suffering, shame, and identity that hit me in all the right ways. And the characters are ones I will be thinking about for a while. Each of them are so complicated, but at the same time very simple and felt so real in the world they lived in. It was such a vivid read, I wish the second book were out already so I could just dive right in and continue the story ☀️✨

(and it’s available on KU at the moment!)
