The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett
3.0
Thanks WF for the recommendation. A great insight into English high-society in the mid-18th century. Matthew Bramble’s use of scatological descriptions are also so detailed and unique, even funny at times and I know of no other novel that relies on this. However, the novel was more travelogue-esque rather than humourous and the beginning of Volume III was especially slow. One thing I would like to know though is why the names of various historical figures seem to be censored e.g. Lady C— H— (Lady Helen Colquhoun)
