“I am the only storm that matters now, and there is no shelter from what I bring.”

Black Sun will be in my top reads of 2021. I put off reading Black Sun because the premise seemed a little fuzzy to me and high fantasy can be very off-putting to me if it's boring. HOWEVER Black Sun was everything and more to what a unique premise book should be.

Roanhorse's writing was magical. The beginning was dark and sucks you in right away with so many questions. You keep guessing throughout the entire book. Roadhouse weaves together different POVs throughout the book to bring them together in the culmination of the climax and the ending was brilliantly done. All of the POVs were good; there was not one where I would have skipped over it or wished for them to shut up. Xiala, Serapio, Okoa, and Naranpa each grew on me in their own way. I did want to shake Naranpa a few times for her dumb decisions; being in such a place of high political power and having no bone of discernment in her body was annoying. Black Sun is the first book I've read that has had neo-pronouns in it and it was a cool thing to see in literature. The casual queerness in Black Sun was unapologetic.

The world-building was *chef's kiss*, the 'magic' system is intriguing and I cannot wait to learn more about it in book two. The different clans were fascinating and I want to learn all I can about them. My knowledge of pre-Columbian indigenous people's mythology is limited but seeing the world being built upon it was refreshing. Roanhorse had me FLIPPING through this book to figure out what was going to happen and the ending had me screaming. I need the second book now please.

I can't find enough words to describe how much I needed this book in January. Black Sun was refreshing. I suggest we all read it, thanks.
