The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
2.0
I don't read romance often because I like other genres more, but since this was recommended to me so much I couldn't wait to give it a try. Granted, the expectations were high because of all the praise but oh boy... this was a mess.
I enjoyed Lucy as a character and her parents are so sweet, but that's about where my love for this book ends. The endless descriptions of Josh's perfect Marvel-Superhero-body (or I guess more of a DC-Superhero-body in the upcoming movie) are honestly a bit awkward and uncomfortable to read about.
The steamy parts were good at times, but in some instances it was just a bit too over the top fo my personal taste. I honestly also don't like that this is one of those stories where the man knows exactly how to treat the woman to the best sex and orgasm in the world without even having to ask her what she likes and how and where she wants to be touched. Again, this is a personal issue, but all of this felt more like a complete fantasy to me, I didn't buy it.
The part that really made my eyes roll though was the last third of the book. The "plot twist" is quite obvious to guess and some of the characters that appear towards the end are just walking stereotypes. The story loses its originality and the ending is so sudden and forced that I was honestly asking myself if the author was running out of time.
All that being said - I can completely see someone enjoying and loving this book despite all the things I personally didn't like. Like all those positive reviews on this page show, many people connected to the story for some of the reasons I despised it. The book and me, we just weren't a good fit.
