The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso
4.0
I’m glad that The Broken Binding decided to do this as part of their subscription as I probably wouldn’t have picked it up and that would’ve been a massive shame as I had a lot of fun with this one
This is a character driven story about a queen trying to get back to her Queendom and her son after a mishap and it’s an enjoyable and turbulent adventure. I loved that she was never in the same sticky situation for too long and there was always another one around the corner keeping you on the edge of your seat
The character herself can be as sassy as they come and is relatively strong minded. She made some questionable decisions in some of the situations she finds herself in, especially considering she’s a queen, but she does what she has to do to survive. She learns a lot about herself and the relationships with the people around her, including the betrayals, which helped give that connection with the reader
I’d say this was at the lower end of epic fantasy. The writing styles very accessible meaning it is very easy to read, it has snippets of world building and political conversations throughout without the dreaded info dumping so it’s very easy to follow and the pages soon pass by without you realising
There are dragons and a magic system in this world but it is only briefly touched upon. What was introduced did sound interesting and I hope in the next instalments there is more of a focus on these elements as I was left wanting to learn more
It ends with some surprises leaving the story open to a few possibilities so I am very much looking forward to picking up the next book, roll on next month!
