Does It Hurt? by H.D. Carlton
4.0
Well shit.. I read this book because so many of my friends/mutuals had enjoyed it and so far I’ve been a fan of HD’s work so why not? I also want to add that I went into this blind outside of knowing what Enzo does to Sawyer on the boat.
(slight spoilers ahead)
I haven’t read many reviews, but the ones I did read during/after didn’t talk enough about Sawyer for me. Not only was she a bad bitch, but she had me cackling. Her calling Enzo a mammoth and trying to rough him up had me ugly laughing. She stayed pretty consistent throughout and I love that in the end she really saved herself. Overall she was an easy fmc to love and I enjoyed her emotional and mental growth too.
As for Enzo? I loved him, I hated him and then I loved him again. My only issues with his character was how he seemed to switch on the drop of a dime and I thought the reason for his anger wasn’t justified enough. I would’ve enjoyed more growth from him that wasn’t just him going from one extreme to another. However, like I mentioned before I did love him. Enzo had a way with his words and although he was an asshole it’s hard not to fall for the sweet talking Italian man.
Now onto the story..
I thoroughly enjoyed this book aside from the pacing and predictability, I just think the story would’ve packed a better punch if we had a better understanding of Sawyer’s past earlier on. It just felt like it was a tad anticlimactic? Especially the lighthouse keepers part in all of it. Although Sylvester was a weird motherfucker, I would’ve enjoyed a darker backstory. Otherwise I loved how easy it was to get sucked into the story. I was also pleasantly surprised at how interesting the ocean aspects were. Of all things I wasn’t expecting to be so happy to read about sharks and marine life. I think I read the whole book in about 7 or 8 hours? Oh and I can’t forget to add how this is definitely a great book for those who enjoy dark/creepy settings. At one point I felt like I was locked in that room with Enzo and Saywer on Raven Isle.
Did I enjoy this book? YES! Do I recommend this book? Yes, BUT please for the love of all things dark only read this book if you enjoy dark romance and thrillers. (Heavy on the dark romance.) As always, check the triggers and happy reading
