Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
5.0
i never thought i’d be rooting this much over two silly ‘guys’.
this was not what i expected! going into my first sci-fi i was a bit weary but oh, this was so much fun. at first rylands character was a bit annoying to me.. his cringey dialogue and silly thoughts made me think it would be unbearable but i quickly realised how wrong i was. his silly humour just made him so likeable and endearing. he wasn’t the hero we thought he would’ve been and i really enjoyed that narrative.
i enjoyed the switch between past and present, the mystery of him working out who he was and how he became to be on this mission to save humanity. i thought that was a really interesting aspect to keep me guessing, and i didn’t expect the little twist of why he was on this mission.
oh and rocky… i never thought id feel this many emotions over a silly little guy. him and rylans relationship really made my heart melt, and the ending was so unexpected and i wasn’t sure how i felt about it at first but i felt it was very wholesome (i was preparing myself for the absolute worst endings) so i was pleasantly surprised and almost in disbelief.
i felt the use of the scientific explanations behind everything happening in this story to be really interesting and not overwhelming like i first expected. i found it really enjoyable to read the ongoings on a scientific level that sometimes, yes, left me confused but i still appreciated the experience and sometimes learnt some interesting things!
