Reread this for the first time in 20 years.
Not gonna lie, it had me in the first half. Before Bella finds out Edward is a vampire, she feels bright and believable. Event he start of their awkward friendship feels very organic and like something I could get behind.
But AS SOON as she finds out he’s a vampire and decides she “loves” him, she turns into a total non-entity of a character. The whole last half of the book is dedicated to Edward info dumping large swaths of vampire lore while Bella sits there like an idiot. Even when James comes into the picture to threaten her, we still have to put up with yet MORE exposition spread throughout exceedingly boring monologues about how Bella doesn’t want anyone to get hurt.
This feels like it’s been flip flopped in my memories. I loved the last half as a kid cause Ooh Vampires, but now I enjoyed the first half cause Ooh Decent Writing.
