In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

5.0

In the Dream House is a powerfully compulsive read about queer domestic abuse and its lack of attention in both the queer community and general public.

Telling her story through anecdotes that have a "scary story" twist was such an absorbing way to write a memoir. I was captivated by Machado's story from the very beginning to very end. Her writing was interesting, lyrical and even poetic at times.

Overall, this book is important because of the light it sheds on domestic abuse. Queer people are just that, people. They experience hardships that straight, cis people experience as well and acknowledging that does not lessen their value in any capacity. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away or help anyone. Cannot recommend more highly!
