The Ninth Hour by Alice McDermott
4.0
I liked this book a lot-- the characters were colorful and vivid, the description of their lives, trials, and tribulations was intriguing, and I felt much sympathy for Sally and Annie and what they went through. However, I had a hard time following some of the story, and it seemed as though a lot of plot set-up happened that was never resolved. Why was Sally depressed in mid-life? What was the significance of Aunt Rose and Red Whelan? What was Jeanne's mortal sin at the end? What definitively led to Sally choosing not to become a nun? I liked the book a lot, but definitely could've used more plot resolution.
