Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

5.0

This book made me laugh and cry so many times... I love the character of Queenie and her development throughout the book, especially when the story gets a bit more dark. The family and friends surrounding her felt so real to me and the chat messages that were thrown in here and there helped to make it feel authentic. I devoured this book and can't wait to read more from the author!

That being said, I have a slight problem with the book being sold as "The Black Bridget Jones". Although it follows a woman and her love life, this is neither a funny oh-look-I'm-so-quirky-and-clumsy-kind-of story, nor is it about a heroic Mr Darcy who saves the day. Although the Bridget Jones novels are a bit darker than the movies and the protagonist is struggling with self esteem and body image issues herself, "Queenie" is dealing with mental health problems in a much more intense and in-depth way. Labelling it as a quirky love story might give people false expectations of what this book is about.
