I loved this collection of short stories, of growing up as first-generation American Chinese. These are not just stories about the children, but also their parents and the communities which assimulated.
The 12 sories are split into three themes:
Family, love, space and time.
Some of my favourite stories inc:
- Lucy, Walnut and Pinenut grow up in a single bedroom with their ma and ba.. as they grow they create space for themselves in "...neon coloured bins where they place their meagre treasures, day after day, until the bright plastic lost its brightness".
- A group of Bei Piao in Beijing find their way: they "have passion, but do not know why. What are [we] fighting for? Where is our direction? Do you want to be an individual? Or a grain of sand?"
- A Father with a computer science background, uses algorithms for dating, marriage and then to connect with his Daughter Wendy.
Each story is framed around a protagonist going through situations from the familiar to surreal. They are all given a choice, against the backdrop of the diaspora, love, and loss
