In Memoriam by Alice Winn

emotional sad fast-paced
  • Strong character development? Yes

3.5

Winn's background is in film and it is obvious here, her debut novel is very dialogue heavy, seems almost as if it is written with the intent of becoming a miniseries or film. (She writes in her acknowledgements that the film rights have already been sold.) I enjoyed this one but unfortunately kept comparing it in my mind to other works I've read before taking on similar topics of a homosexual love in WW1, and those previous works just worked a lot better for me. It will be interesting to see how this gets translated to the screen (if it goes there) as many of the behaviours of the characters I excused due to their age (in their teens). I doubt film would cast so young, so it'll be interesting to see how / if they change the character actions as they age up the characters.
