Tooth and Nail by Patricia Logan

A US Marshal transfers from his office in Lexington Kentucky to another office in California. When he arrives he is met I. The parking lot by his new boss and new partner and gets a strange and vague partial tour. Then they meet in the Chief’s office and Ari finds out he’s transferred to an office charged with doing the Marshal’s job, but for supernatural beings and aliens. His new partner, Eoghan, has been working solo which is not allowed and driving off new partners since his long time partner died the year before. This new partner is his last chance.
As the new partners navigate some interesting call outs and get a sense of each other we learn about this world which differs quite a bit from existing PNR/Fantasy mythology. It’s an interesting premise and I’ve got to say, it’s entirely believable to me that our government would have secret agencies to deal with “others.” It’s kind of a Men in Black premise where citizen encounters with “others” are “cleansed.”
The growth of the relationship is sweet in a “we really shouldn’t do this, oh yup we’re gonna do this” way. It seems to an overarching story that’s going to stretch through the series while a series of shorter encounters in each book tell us more about this world.
It was a fun read but I still don’t feel like I really know the MCs yet. Hopefully that will I,prove with book two.
