The Last Man by Mary Shelley
3.0
The first third of the book or so has a plot purpose for being there but becomes completely irrelevant. Emotionally draining book in 2020. Like how waiting for godot is a play where nothing happens, twice, The Last Man is a book where a bad thing happens and it will never stop happening. At times pretty touching, at times surprisingly experimental. Nothing I've ever read is like it, but the language does make it a bit of a challenge to get through.
