The Milky Way: An Autobiography of Our Galaxy by Moiya McTier
Did not finish book. Stopped at 26%.
I was really interested in this book’s concept, but it just grated against my brain to the point I couldn’t get through it. The idea of telling the story of our galaxy from the POV of our galaxy is so clever, but the voice this author chose was condescending, overly silly, and truly so annoying to read. I’d get to a science-y part and get interested, and then would immediately be thrust into an eye-rolling inducing sentence along the lines of “your fragile little human brains can’t comprehend THIS concept.” The explanation would then be so simplified (or even overly anthropomorphized) as to be even harder to understand. I also think the inclusion of human myths/stories about the Milky Way is interesting, but I just don’t think it was blended with the science or the “autobiography” in a way that flowed. Maybe this book is trying to be too many things at once and therefore failing at all of them. So disappointed that I didn’t like this at all, hoping to find a pop-science book about our galaxy that doesn’t make me feel like I’m being patronized the entire time.
